In order to sustain a successful student veterans program, it is important to not only identify and recognize how admission/readmission policies and procedures will impact this population, but also to regularly review, update, or revise policies to ensure they are meeting the needs of both the students and your institution. This section of the Toolkit will focus on a number of key issues regarding the admissions and financial aid processes, which often warrant unique considerations for student veterans.
Because of their service, many veterans are launching formal education pursuits at a different stage of life compared to their same aged peers and/or recent high school graduates. As a result, they may not have current college entrance exam scores, or their scores may simply not reflect their level of preparedness for higher education after years of service and formal military training/education. That’s why official military transcripts are a key element of the veteran’s admissions package and a useful indicator of college preparedness. After all, as participants in the ACE Veteran Success Jam indicated, it takes the same skills to succeed in the military as it does to succeed in school.
